OFFICE OF CAREER SERVICES FIRST YEARS 2020

The main purpose for joining Chuka University is for you to develop your career. You have been admitted to do different courses and programs. Whatever area you are in, make sure you excel in it. Grow your career with a passion. There a number of skills that will help you grow in your profession and career. The office of career services through workshops, talks and students forums;

·         Helps students develop soft skills such as communication skills, interpersonal skills, listening skills, CV writing skills, job search skills and other skills required in work environment to bridge the skill gap.

·         Helps students in personal development and Branding

·         Creates an opportunity for interaction and networking between students and employers during career open weeks.

·         Creates an opportunity for innovation and startup ideas

To achieve its objectives the following services and activities are carried out;

·         Academic advising and career counselling where students develop life goals and academic progression. Through academic advising students are empowered to make the right career choices. You are encouraged to visit this office whenever you encounter challenges related to your career.

Linkage between students and industries this is done through invitation of guest speakers from industries, alumni specialists in various areas and during career week industries and institutions are encouraged to exhibit. Student are able to learn from about their organizations. You are all advised to get involved in university functions and forums as they expose you to a wealth of information that will help you in your career.

·         Encouraging innovation and entrepreneur incubation, Students are encouraged to come up with startup ideas. These ideas are mentored through TISC and grown to become business ideas. Whatever area of study you can be creative and come up with a business idea that will solve people’s problems. We encourage you to be the Mark Zuckerberg of your time and come up with an innovation that will change people’s life. Those students with business ideas or creativity of some kind are encouraged to visit this office.

·         Training Student Career Ambassadors who are supposed to help other students in career related issues. They are also supposed to be on the lookout for hindrances to career development such as drugs and substance abuse and offer the necessary advice or refer. A notice will be given for those that are interested to train as Students Career Ambassadors to apply, it is voluntary.

·         Working with Chuka University Alumni Association to provide networking and linkages with industries. The alumni association provide expertise in various study areas and professional areas. It is important for you to attend every alumni forums in the university to learn more.

I look forward to meeting you in person once this COVID 19 is over and the government opens the universities, or now stay safe. I also wish you all the best in your stay in Chuka University.
